Codex banked resets: use a saved reset
A banked reset is a one-time usage reset kept in your account for later use, subject to its offer's expiration. It is separate from a public automatic reset and your normal account window.
Should I use a banked reset now?
Check your remaining allowances, their reset times and the offer's expiry before deciding. These scenarios guide your checks; they do not predict how long your next task will run.
| Your situation | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Natural refresh is near and you can still work | Remaining 5-hour and weekly allowances, natural reset time, offer expiry. | Consider waiting for the natural refresh if it meets your needs. A full banked reset changes the weekly date; do not assume the old date will still apply. |
| A current task is blocked by a usage limit | Which window is exhausted and whether an eligible saved reset is actually available. | Review the offer before redeeming. After use, refresh Usage and replace the calculator time and any old reminder. |
| An unused offer is close to expiry | The account-displayed expiry, eligible windows and your planned work. | Review whether using it helps your planned work before it expires. If no window is eligible to reset, OpenAI says the reset remains available; future grants are not guaranteed. |

Check my banked reset decision
Choose what your account shows. Inputs stay in this page; nothing is redeemed. This checklist cannot estimate how long your work will run.
No new weekly date is calculated from redemption time. Use the updated Usage timestamp after applying a reset.
Wait, use a banked reset, buy a reset, or add credits?
| Option | When it applies | Allowance and timing | Official rules |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal usage window | Automatic, at the account's displayed time | Refreshes that allowance; read each window separately | Check rules ↗ |
| Public reset | Applied to accounts covered by the announcement | An announcement is not a saved offer or proof of your account's recovery | Check rules ↗ |
| Banked reset | Saved until redeemed or the offer expires | A full reset refreshes eligible windows and can move the weekly date; read the updated time | Check rules ↗ |
| Paid instant reset | Applied as soon as purchase succeeds; cannot be saved | Restores 5-hour and weekly allowances, rather than adding credits | Check rules ↗ |
| Usage credits | Separate balance used after included allowances are exhausted | Does not increase the included plan limit or turn into a banked reset; personal-plan purchases expire after 12 months | Check rules ↗ |
For a paid instant reset, the next weekly refresh is seven days after your first Work or Codex request following application, rather than necessarily seven days after payment. Copy the updated time from Usage. Paid reset timing ↗
Checked October 1, 2026. Paid resets are offered to eligible Plus/Pro personal accounts; other named plans are excluded by the current rules. Credits and banked offers have separate eligibility. Compare the price, remaining allowance and expiry shown in your account before choosing. These are ChatGPT usage credits, separate from API credits and wallet funds.

Saved reset, automatic event, or normal window?
| Type | What to check |
|---|---|
| Banked reset | Your saved offer and its redemption details. You choose when to use an available reset. |
| Public automatic reset | The announcement's affected accounts and rollout. It applies directly; it does not add a saved reset. |
| Personal usage window | The reset time shown in your account for the allowance you are checking. |
A banked reset does not permanently raise your plan allowance, and it is not cash or API credit. One announcement may describe both automatic and banked actions; a grant date is not a redemption date. Official banked reset guidance →
Find and use an available reset
- Open Settings → Usage for the account or workspace you intend to use. Look for the usage summary showing an available reset or a Full reset option.
- Read the offer's expiration and affected limits before confirming. A limit-reached screen may also show available account options.
- After use, reopen Usage and copy the newly displayed reset time. Do not keep planning against an older date.
In the current CLI, /usage opens account usage actions, including an available earned reset. This site does not sign in to your account or redeem one for you. CLI command reference →
Eligibility and expiry belong to the specific offer
The current Help article describes promotional grants to qualifying Plus, Pro and Business accounts during a rollout. Plan, workspace, region, account creation cutoffs and availability can affect eligibility. Being on a named plan alone does not confirm that your account received a reset.
Check the expiration shown in your account or offer. There is no single lifetime promised for every banked reset; an expired unused offer cannot be restored or reissued. If the offer or expiration is not visible, its status is unknown here. Future grants are not guaranteed.
Developer data can expose an available count without complete offer details, and an expiration field may be absent. Missing information is not proof that an offer never expires. Account data field notes →
A full reset can move your weekly reset time
OpenAI says a full banked reset refreshes the 5-hour and weekly usage windows and changes the weekly reset date. The reset is consumed only after successfully refreshing at least one eligible window; if nothing is eligible to reset, it stays available.
Illustration: suppose your old weekly date was Friday. You use a full banked reset and resume Codex on Tuesday. OpenAI's example places the next weekly reset around the following Tuesday, with no additional reset on the old Friday. This explains the change; your updated Usage screen supplies the actual timestamp.
Calculate from the new account timestamp →Missing reset or unchanged usage?
- Confirm the account and workspace, then refresh or reopen Usage. Its display may take a short time to update.
- Separate an automatic announcement from a saved offer. Check whether the expected promotion covered your account and whether the saved offer expired.
- If an eligible reset still appears missing or incorrectly applied, contact OpenAI Support with the offer, use time and time zone, current Usage screenshot, client and model. Support can investigate; reporting alone does not entitle you to another reset or compensation.
WhenResets can show a public grant announcement, but cannot verify your private eligibility, expiry or redemption. Our archive is evidence about public records, not a log of your account actions.
