Check the time shown in your ChatGPT account
ChatGPT does not have a single universal reset time. Available messages and tools depend on your plan, model and feature. Some limits renew after a usage window, but their allowance and timing can change. If ChatGPT shows a reset time in the model picker or limit notice, use that account-specific time rather than a generic countdown. OpenAI's Free tier guidance and Plus plan guidance describe different limits.
WhenResets does not connect to your ChatGPT account or read its remaining messages. We cannot show your personal reset timestamp or confirm that a public Codex announcement changed your ChatGPT allowance.
Find your next available time
- Open ChatGPT with the account and workspace that showed the limit. Check the selected model and the exact wording of the notice.
- Look in the model picker or limit notice for a reset timestamp, when one is provided. Note its timezone. Do not infer it from another user's screenshot or a different model.
- If no time is shown, consult the current help page for your plan and feature. If access still fails after a displayed time passes, check service status and contact OpenAI Support with the exact notice. OpenAI service status
Which kind of limit did you reach?
OpenAI's current Free tier FAQ describes everyday text chats as unlimited, subject to safeguards against abuse. That does not make every model, GPT or feature unlimited: uploads, image generation and other tools can have separate limits. Plus can have message caps that vary with system conditions, and Pro model allowances also depend on the plan and model. Free tier FAQ · Plus plan · Pro model allowances
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| A message or model limit notice | Check that model's notice and any displayed reset time. A different model may have a separate allowance or availability. |
| A tool or feature limit | File uploads, image tools, GPTs and other features can have limits separate from text messages. Follow the feature's notice. |
| Errors across models or accounts | Check status.openai.com for a service incident. An incident is not a personal quota timer. |

A public Codex reset is a different signal
WhenResets tracks public Codex reset announcements. Those announcements can concern eligible Codex usage, but they do not establish a new ChatGPT message window for every account. OpenAI documents ChatGPT and Codex usage in different contexts. Check the affected product and your own account notice before treating an announcement as a personal reset. Quick answers
Does ChatGPT reset at midnight?
There is no published midnight reset rule for every ChatGPT plan, model and feature. Use the limit notice for the allowance you reached.
Does ChatGPT reset every five hours?
No universal five-hour rule applies to standard ChatGPT messages. Some ChatGPT Work and Codex allowances have five-hour windows alongside other limits. Check the product and the exact limit shown in your account before using that window as a timer. Source: Work and Codex usage windows
Can I get more messages by starting a new chat?
A new conversation does not by itself refresh an account-level model or feature allowance. Check whether your notice is about usage, a conversation length, or service availability.
